April 27, 2008 Newsletter

We squeezed the match in between the rain drops. The clouds cleared about halfway through setup on Saturday and we had wall to wall sunshine on Sunday. So, where were the rest of you? Out working on your yard? We had 45 shooters and 13 reshoots for a total of 58 guns.

We had four new shooters this month: Shannon Rotondo, Jarod Dean, Gordon Friel & Scott Klebe.

A big thank you to the small setup crew of Ed Henry, Rich Ellis, John Pakeltis, Matthew Birch and Bud Connolly. It was a lot of work to squeeze in 3 area level stages into those two bays. We can always use more help. If you can make it out for setup once our twice a season, it would help a lot.

Sorry for the scramble to get in to the second squad on Sunday. My crystal ball was not shined up after the winter. With the light turnout, we finished up quite a bit ahead of schedule. And since most of the shooters were reshoots from the first squad, we went ahead and started. It looks like I will have to change the start time for the second squad back to 11:00 AM just so everyone shows up in time to register and gear up. It should help to have Atto back next month to do registrations and I can concentrate on ROing.

What's your opinion on using the paster guns to paste targets? Like them or hate them, please let me know. If you don't know how to work the paster gun, ask someone to show you how. The biggest problem we had with them occurred when tearing the tape off using the serrated edge at the back of the gun. Sometimes the tape gets hung up and the paster gun jams. Tear off the tape about an inch outside of the track and it will run all day. So, the moral of the story is, if you want to finish faster, pick up a paster gun and use it, or help reset steel.

If you sign up for (or renew) USPSA membership at the match, you can shoot the match for free (that's like getting your USPSA membership for $25). For the new members, when you receive your first issue of Front Sight, use the PIN on the cover to sign up to receive e-mail notification when results are posted to the USPSA Local and Major Match results page. Our results are always posted to the USPSA Local Match Results first. It takes a little while to massage the HTML pages that come out of EzWinScore.

We also have Crooked Creek Conservation Club applications. Ask Bill, Ed or myself for one if you are interested in joining. We hold a pistol practice on Wednesday evening starting about 4:00 PM for members.

Our next match will be on Sunday, May 25th at Crooked Creek in Hartsgrove. Setup will be on Saturday, May 24th starting at 1:30 PM. And we will continue the practice of running one classifier each match. Now, you don't have any reason not to be classified before that big match.

Signups for Sunday start at 7:30AM. We will run two (2) squads on Sunday at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Please arrive in time to register, gear-up and be ready to shoot. I will try to design the stages to keep us on schedule so that you don't have to wait for the second squad. The last squad will help with teardown. I would like to run more squads, or at least finish faster. We purchased four (4) target paster guns this winter. All we need is for you to help reset the stage for the next shooter. I hope the target paster guns will help.

Crooked Creek Conservation Club members: The club will be building a shelter over the two inner benches on the pistol bays and removing some dirt from the end of the middle berm. This work detail will take place Tuesday afternoons/evenings (after work around 4 or 5PM) starting in May (or as ground conditions permit). This should give us a place to do signups, get out of the rain or into some shade and add a good Safety Area. Please call or e-mail if you have any questions. This is our chance to show the club that we will help out and that we our interested in improving the club. We need to build some good will for the pistol shooters if we will ever to be able to add some additional pistol bays.
